Citizen of the Year 2019

Kelvyn Jenkins named as Hay on Wye Citizen of the Year.

The annual award, organised by Hay Town Council, is to recognise any individual who voluntarily gives their time to improve the life and well - being of Hay and it’s residents.

Kelvyn was honoured for the work that he has carried out in conjunction with the Royal British Legion in organising a number of commemorative events in and around the town to honour servicemen and women who have given their lives. The event held over a weekend in the summer of 2018 to commemorate the end of WW1 was an outstanding success.

Cllr Trudy Stedman said " I was really pleased to present this award to Kelvyn. Although the nominations received were in relation to his work in organising events Kelvyn was also nominated last year for his work with individuals who need support and this is probably a less well known side of him. The WW1 commemoration weekend was a real success and Kelvyn organised much of it from his bed as he was laid up with a bad back and unable to walk. My overiding memory will always be the sight of Kelvyn in immense pain being pretty much carried by his partner Helen and his son to reach the war memorial in order to lay a rose. For me this sums up Kelvyn and why he is such a deserving winner of the Citizen of the Year award"
