Petition Delivered, What Next?

A 1350 signature petition was delivered to County Hall on 5 March 2019. What's happened since?

A petition from residents in Hay on Wye calling on Powys County Council Cabinet to reconsider decisions made at their December 2018 meeting was delivered by the Mayor of Hay, Cllr. Trudy Stedman, accompanied by Cllr Alan Powell and Cllr Jade Hall on 5 March 2018.

Cllr Stedman explained that frustation with the lack of communication from Powys Cabinet had led Hay Town Council to relaise that they needed to take matters into their own hands. The petition was evidence that they had the support of residents.

So what has happened since?

The Town Council has since received a formal letter from Powys in which they mention the petition but carry on to confirm their decisions made at their meeting in December 2018.

The situation at present is that:

  • We (HTC) have been offered a 99 year lease of the Recreation Facilities - we are currently negotiating the terms of the lease.
  • HTC have committed to continue to run the Public Toilets until 1 October 2019 to allow Powys time to decide how they wish to proceed.
  • Powys Cabinet have rejected our request to have the Shire Reserves fund (set aside for a community hall in Hay) released to us and in deed are arguing that the fund is not solely for use in Hay on Wye.
  • Following on from this decision they have also rejected our request to use the Shire reserves money to purchase the old library building for use as a community hub.
